Tour 4 – Auckland to Waitomo Glowworm Caves and Hobbiton Tour
This is a full-day tour from Auckland to two of New Zealand’s most popular visitor attractions. We start the day with a scenic drive south of Auckland through the beutiful regions of the Waikato and King Country in New Zealand’s North Island. Your private driver guide will provide snacks as you admire the rolling hills and pastoral farmlands, and then through Rangariri, where an important battle in the history of New Zealand and land rights between British settlers and the Maori people took place. By mid to late morning we will arrive in Waitomo for our tour of the Waitomo Glowworm Caves.
On the guided tour through the caves you will see the natural art of limestone formations formed over hundreds of years. The highlight of the tour is the boat ride along the underground river to see the majesty of the glowworms glowing on the cave walls and ceiling – words cannot truly describe this sensation, it is an experience like no other!
Next, enjoy a restaurant or picnic lunch (by pre-arrangment) before crossing the Kaimai Ranges towards Matamata for your visit to the Hobbiton Movie Set. Here you will learn how a working sheep farm was transformed into Peter Jackson’s vision JRR Tolkien’s village of Hobbiton – heart of the Shire and home of Bilbo Bagins and friends – for The Lord of the Rings movies. You can’t visit Hobbiton and not have your photo taken in front of one (or more) of the hobbit holes. You’ll also see the Mill and other locations recognisable from the three movies, which were filmed in various locations around New Zealand. The tour of the village concludes with a complimentary drink in the Green Dragon Inn.
Return to Auckland in the early evening.
